How to mute people in the Island Experiment chat

Most people have access to the FB-provided chat on the right side of the screen when you're playing the game in your browser through Facebook, or on the left side of the screen if you're playing in Gameroom. Unfortunately, on the World Wide Web, there are always the occasional trolls (trouble-makers) and scammers. The only thing that does any good with these people is to just mute them in the chat room so that you never see them again. WARNING: muting can be undone for a short while, but once the spot you muted rolls off the chat log, it is permanent and cannot be undone. If the person you want to mute is a real person and you can get their FB profile link, you are better off to go to their FB profile and use FB's "block" feature. This has two benefits: 1) It can be undone at any time if you change your mind and 2) FB blocking means that neither person can see the other one. Just muting in chat only works one way... you can't see what that person is saying, but they can still see what you are saying.

Here is how to mute someone just in the chat, best used on anonymous trolls and scammers. These pictures are from the browser, but it works exactly the same way in the Gameroom chat. (Click the pictures to enlarge them if you can't see the details well enough.)

First, you have to hover your mouse over the top portion of the person's message. Once you do that, you will see an X pop up on the right side. You cannot see this X until you have hovered over the message for a moment. Place your cursor over the X, and it will turn into a hand instead of a pointer, and a bubble pops up that says "Hide". Click the X.

Next, you'll see that the person's whole message disappears, but you're not done yet. You will see three words... Unhide, Mute, Report. Click "mute" and now that person is muted in the chat room - you will never see anything else from that account again. (There is no guarantee that they won't come back with another account.) You can also choose "report" and then the "mute" if you like, but it won't do any good. Facebook does not monitor these chats in any way. Our only options are to ignore them or to mute them.

This part is VERY important! After you have clicked "mute", look at it one more time. That spot will now say " ____ has been muted. Undo". Check that name very carefully and make sure it's the right person! Sometimes when chat is very busy, just as you click the X, it jumps to a new person and you click the wrong message. So always check that name, and if you got the wrong person, click "undo" then go up to the right one and try again.
